Synthesis and Characterization of Carbohydrate-conjugated Polyesters and Polyurethanes

Abstract Details

, Master of Science, University of Akron, Polymer Science.
Carbohydrates play critical roles in biology as they are widely used to construct living tissues, as well as participate in biological processes, including supplying energy and bio-recognition. Their excellent biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, and abundant source make them promising candidates for biologically relevant applications. In this work, mannose-containing polyesters and polyurethanes were designed and synthesized as anti-platelet adhesion coatings and antimicrobial polymers. The polymers were synthesized via a variety of methods including step-growth polymerization, copper-assisted azide-alkyne cycloaddition and atom transfer radical polymerization. Blood-contacting experiments were conducted to determine the reduction of platelets on the coating, while anti-microbial assays were conducted to determine the antimicrobial activity. This work shows that polyesters with mannose and soybean oil as pendant groups significantly reduce platelet adhesion, and polyurethanes that bear mannose and lysine show high antimicrobial activity.
