IMPROVEMENTS OF DILEMMA ZONE OPERATION AT HIGH-SPEED INTERSECTIONS IN MIXED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

The yellow light (Amber) dilemma zone commonly occurs at high-speed intersection approaches, where vehicles can neither safely stop before the stop line nor proceed through the intersection during amber interval. Within such an area, a vehicle might be involved in a right-angle crash or rear-end collision. This area in which driver can neither decide to stop or go safely is known as dilemma zone. Dilemma zone is different for each vehicle. This issue is been extensively discussed over five decades in traffic engineering field but no good solution evolved. The focus of this paper is to reduce dilemma zone with the help of autonomous vehicles. Autonomous vehicles are driverless, self-driving, robotic cars having ability of self-decision and operate safely according to rules coded inside it. Autonomous vehicles sense it environment and navigate without any human input. If an autonomous vehicle is in the dilemma zone it analyses beforehand whether to safely stop or proceed for amber and maintains safe controlled moments in dilemma zone. This moment of Autonomous vehicle creates safe gap between vehicles, which eventually reduces dilemma zone. The traffic flow behavior and the reduction of dilemma zone for different percentages of autonomous vehicles are simulated. Research conducted in a wide range for providing complete safety and comfort by meeting all requirements.
