Investigation of The Assembly Behavior of Macroions In The Presence of Bulky Ions

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Science, University of Akron, Polymer Science.
In this work, specific types of macroions were represented by a coarse-grained (CG) model and the assembly behavior of a mixture of two types of macroions in solution using this model was performed for the first time. The CG models of polyoxometalates Keggin anion {PW12O40} and Keplerate-polyoxometalate {Mo72Fe30} were designed and simulated in solutions, respectively. The simulation results using our new model for macroions are consistent with experimental observation—the {Mo72Fe30} can self-assemble while the Keggin anions stay well-dispersed in the solution. Recent experimental results show that the size of blackberries decreases with the introduction of Keggin ions {Mo72Fe30} into the solution. In the simulation, the assembly of a mixture containing the two types of macroions in solution was also investigated. The result shows that the Keggin anions participated in the assembly process. This is found to be a thermodynamically favorable state.
