Skin Tone, Body Image, and Familismo: An Investigation of Latina Women

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Akron, Counseling Psychology.
The following study examined the Latina/o cultural value of familismo (close family relationships) as a moderator in the relationship between internalization of Western sociocultural standards of attractiveness and Latina women’s body image. The study also investigated the effect on body image of discrepancy between reported familismo attitudes versus reported familismo behavior. Results from an online sample of 171 Latinas suggested that neither attitudinal nor behavioral familismo were effective in buffering the relationship between internalization and body surveillance, body shame, or skin tone satisfaction. Exploratory moderation analysis of each the subscale factors (i.e., family support, family interconnectedness, family honor, and subjugation of self for family) revealed that behavioral family support moderated the relationship between internalization and skin tone satisfaction. Results of the polynomial regression analysis indicated that attitudinal-behavioral familismo discrepancy significantly predicted body shame, but not surveillance or skin tone satisfaction. Overall, the findings highlight the need for further research on familismo as a potential protective factor. Included are directions for future research as well as implications for clinical interventions.
