Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Akron, Counselor Education and Supervision.
A major issue confronting counselor educators today is the need to identify and remediate counselors-in-training (CITs) who are having difficulties meeting professional competencies. The existing body of research on remediation in the counseling profession has focused on programmatic remedial interventions, remediation implementation, and the dismissal of students as part of the gatekeeping role of counselor educators. Through an instrumental multiple-case study approach, the remediation experiences of six CITs in master’s level counseling programs is described. The experiences of two groups of participants, those who had recently completed remediation within the last year, and those who had completed remediation in the last five years, were compared for similarities and differences. Five themes were identified: Counselors-in-Training Emotions and Responses to Remediation, Dynamics of Working Alliance during Remediation, Remediation Delivery and Plan Specifics, Coping in Remediation, and Professional Outcomes of Remediation. Additionally, a model emerged describing experiences that were common to all participants regardless of the amount of time that elapsed since completing remediation. Findings are discussed in relation to the context of developmental models of counseling supervision, the supervisory working alliance, and posttraumatic growth. Practice implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.
