Abstract
Bio-based thermosetting composites were prepared using bio-based resin and biomass-based fillers. Soybean oil and bismaleimide, crosslinked by the ene reaction, was used as the resin. Compression-molded composite films with increasing amounts of torrefied soy hull filler were prepared and evaluated. The effect of the filler on the composite films was evaluated. The filler was found to strengthen and stiffen the films. To better understand the cure of soybean oil and bismaleimide, the cure kinetics were analyzed with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) using the isothermal and non- isothermal methods. The catalytic effect of montmorillonite K10 (MMT-K10) on the cure of soybean oil and bismaleimide was studied, also. A faster cure rate and an average activation energy reduction were observed with 15 wt% MMT-K10. Lastly, several bio- based crosslinkers were prepared and evaluated. Oleic acid-functionalized cellulose cured with maleimide-functionalized epoxidized linseed oil resulted in crosslinked material with high Tg (157 °C).
