Abstract
While communication of care and future-care plans among family members has been extensively studied within older adult populations (Balducci et al., 2008; Fowler & Fisher, 2014; Pillemer & Suitor, 2014; Wolff & Kasper, 2006), there has been little literature focused on the thoughts of middle-aged adults about late life and care preferences. This dissertation sought to examine the extent to which future-care plans were created, and whether or not these plans were shared, by adults in midlife, as well as with whom middle-aged adults were sharing their future-care plans. Results indicated that that the strongest predictors of future-care planning and sharing by middle-aged adults were self-efficacy or perceptions of ability to be successful, age, and participant discussion of other future-care needs Additionally, individuals who created future-care plans were highly likely to share those plans, most often with an adult child, a spouse or partner, or both, with creating and sharing plans highly correlated. Despite slightly higher numbers of participants sharing information with adult children, preferences for future-caregivers skewed slightly towards spouses over adult children.
