Supervisee Perceptions of Cultural Rupture & Cultural Humility: Impact on the Supervisory Relationship

This study investigates the relationships between supervisee perceptions of supervisor cultural humility, perceived identity importance, negative affect due to cultural ruptures in supervision, and the supervisory working alliance (SWA). Data from a sample of 209 graduate supervisees currently engaged in psychotherapy supervision were used. Findings from research on cultural rupture and perceived cultural humility in the therapeutic working alliance were replicated within a supervisory context. Specifically, supervisees’ negative affect resulting from cultural ruptures in supervision was negatively associated with perceptions of supervisor cultural humility, and SWA. Furthermore, perceived supervisor cultural humility was positively associated with SWA, results were consistent with the hypothesis that cultural humility mediates the relationship between negative affect due to rupture and SWA. Results did not support the hypothesis that supervisees’ perceptions of the importance of identities implicated in a rupture to their overall identity played a mediating role in the relationships among other primary variables in this study. Implications for supervision and future directions for research are discussed.
