Abstract Details

The purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of counselor trainees’ multicultural counseling competencies to their level of social justice self-efficacy when taking specific demographic characteristics into account. One hundred forty-six master’s level counselor trainees across the United States completed a web-based survey consisting of three instruments; the Social Justice Self-Efficacy Scale (SJSE), the Multicultural Counseling Inventory (MCI), the Marlowe-Crown Social Desirability Scale – Short Form C (MCSDS-SF), and a demographic questionnaire. Stepwise linear regression indicated that the Number of Multicultural Counseling Courses Taken, Multicultural Awareness, and Multicultural Counseling Knowledge significantly predicted SJSE score. Multicultural Awareness showed the strongest relationship with SJSE in the model. Limitations and recommendations for future research on social justice self-efficacy and cultural competency development for counselor trainees were discussed.
