Organizational Improvement of Nigerian Catholic Chaplaincy in Central Ohio: Towards Effective Collaboration for Rural and Community Development in Nigeria

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Education, Ashland University, College of Education.
This qualitative study used an ethnographic approach to study Nigerian immigrants in the United States who are Catholics. The research proposed ways to improve a diaspora faith-based organization for effective collaboration with mainstream agencies in social services delivery. Research results came from data collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and my observations. Three research questions helped to develop the interview protocol that brought out the participants’ viewpoints as diaspora people. Data analysis revealed the cultural background of participants’ utterances. Three compelling themes emerged from the process: Self-actualization, sense of the sacred, and community spirit. Further analysis of data and discussions with the focus group led to the theory of Umunna-bụ-ike, the epitome of diaspora Africans’ motivations toward community development. The three themes answered the research questions while the developed theory addressed the research topic. Research findings led to the conclusion that it is pertinent for migrants to retain their core identities and cultural values so that these could positively transform their host societies and improve collaborative participation in rural and community development to their countries of origin and their host countries.
