The Peach Bottom Slate (PBS) in the Pennsylvania Piedmont Province is one of the most distinctive lithologies in the region; yet, its origin is still in debate. The traditional model for the origin of the PBS is that it is a metamorphosed organic-rich mudstone; however, recent work by Valentino (1994) suggests that its unique composition is the result of shearing during the Late Paleozoic Alleghanian orogeny. While the effects of fluids on rock deformation have been well documented, the role of fluids in the formation of the Peach Bottom shear zone has not been studied. Provided with an opportunity to address these questions, this study uses fluid inclusion microthermometry and CL to characterize the fluids in three vein types representing early to late stages of deformation relative to the S1 cleavage. Results from cathodoluminescence and microthermometry for each vein generation indicate that a homogenous CO2-H2O-NaCl fluid with varying amounts of CH4 was heterogeneously trapped throughout the deformation events at approximately 250 °C and pressures ranging from 120 to 200 MPa. The relatively consistent fluid compositions within rock units and across time excludes fluid composition as the cause for heterogeneous deformation and no qualitative evidence for increased fluid volumes in the Peach Bottom relative to adjacent units was found. The fluids were believed to have been derived from the metamorphism of carbonate units buried by thrusting along the Martic Thrust.
