The relationship between neighborhood characteristics such as social control and social cohesion, and problem behaviors such as delinquency and alcohol use, is well established. However, few studies exist examining potential differences in parent vs. adolescent perceptions of neighborhoods and whether adolescent or parent perceptions of neighborhoods are more closely related to adolescent problem behaviors. The current study uses parent-adolescent dyads to assess the importance of parent versus adolescent perceptions of neighborhood characteristics. Participants included 109 parent-child dyads from the Wood County Needs Assessment. Inconsistent with previous literature, analyses did not find a significant relationship between perceptions of social control and problem behaviors for either adolescent or parent reports. Intraclass correlations suggest that parent and adolescent reports were not significantly correlated for perceptions of social control, while significantly, but weakly correlated for reports of adolescent problem behavior. Mean differences between parent and child report were found for both problem behaviors and social control, however, these differences were no longer significant when controlling for age and sex of the adolescent. The lack of significant findings regarding the relationship between perceived social control and problems behaviors suggest that these constructs may manifest differently in rural populations. The discrepancy between parent and child report suggests that parent reports of perceived neighborhood characteristics and their child’s behavior are unlikely to be congruent with adolescent reports on similar constructs, and highlight the importance of using multiple informants.
