Abstract
Over ninety years ago the hermetic work Trilce, by Peruvian poet Cesar Vallejo, was published in Lima and has since then grown to become a source of wonder and marvel around the world. While many dedicated researchers have delved into the intricacies of this great work via both literary and linguistic means, none have yet to focus solely on the syntactic structures of Trilce and have only made passing suppositions as to how syntax functions within the work. This thesis dedicates itself to filling this gap by taking the first analytical steps necessary to prove that the syntax of this avant-garde poetic masterpiece does deserve a closer examination, and while doing so, the sentence structure of every poem is scrutinized in relation to whether each independent clause has both nominal and verbal syntagmas, as well as normal word order. Upon finishing this painstaking study, the high frequency of sentence fragmentation is noted and used to explain why nearly 20% of Trilce does not follow the nominal-verbal syntagma rule, and once fragmentation is taken into consideration, it is determined that Trilce breaks the syntactic norm less than 2% of the time and is therefore "normal," but we conclude suggestion that a closer look is necessary to determine the impact of syntactic fragmentation on semantic meaning in Cesar Vallejo's work.
