The Influence of Peers' Attitudes and Behaviors on Young Adults' Intimate Partner Violence

This study draws on social learning theory and the concept of normative climates to examine the association between peers' behaviors and attitudes, and young adults' experiences with intimate partner violence. Prior studies examining peer influence on intimate partner violence primarily have focused on the effect of friends' general violence during the adolescent period. Studies based on adults have drawn from specific samples that are not generalizable to larger populations, or have not examined male as well as female victimization. In addition, the literature on network influences assumes that peer influence decreases with age, with a corresponding increase in importance of romantic partners, who may exert a protective effect with respect to violent and deviant behavior. Yet intimate partner violence may function differently than general anti-social behavior. I used data from the fifth interview of the Toledo Adolescent Relationship Study (TARS) (n = 928) to examine associations between peers' behaviors and attitudes regarding partner violence and respondents' self-reports of intimate partner violence among young adults ages 22-29. Controlling for other known correlates of intimate partner violence, peers' intimate partner violence and justifications for such violence, and peers' deviance are related to an increase in intimate partner violence in young adulthood.
