Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. With a compromised cardiovascular system, functional capacity and quality of life diminish, resulting in a dependent lifestyle or death. Cardiac rehabilitation has been an effective method for preventing additional cardiovascular events from occurring. Cardiac rehab facilities need to have standardized tests that can predict functional capacity and mortality that are easy to administer, cost effective, and achievable for the patients. Walk tests are common tools used in clinical facilities to help predict the functional capacity of patients. While the six-minute walk test has high validity and reliability in predicting mortality in cardiac patients, there is little known for the 12-minute walk tests as a successful predictor of mortality. The objective of this study is to determine if the 12-minute walk test is a valid and reliable predictor variable of mortality in phase II cardiac rehab patients.
