Abstract
"We Are Not Those Girls" follows girls and women through the ongoing process of becoming as they define themselves individually and relationally. The eight short stories in the collection investigate self-recognition, the subjectivity of memory, and the extent to which characters are willing to deceive themselves in order to maintain equilibrium. In "Active Play," the narrator struggles to decipher a scene glimpsed through the teacher's lounge window, and in "WrestleMania VIII," a father grapples with the memory of his deceased wife. Set against menacing natural landscapes, the domestic moments of these stories refract larger societal conflicts that weigh on these characters and their bodies: "Meat Bees" is embedded in the perennial war abroad; "Keeper" is set against a backdrop of mass incarceration and diminishing economic opportunity. Ultimately, these characters seek connection, agency, and meaning in their circumscribed worlds.
