The Brute Force Algorithm

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Bowling Green State University, Creative Writing/Fiction.
This collection of short stories are all set in the fictional town of St. Bernadette, Indiana. Of all the unifying characteristics in this collection, social milieu is certainly the most cohesive element. Almost every story is about someone who is living in reduced circumstances, but that is not the only function of social class. The characters seem to be in situations where they are willing to commodify their bodies in some fashion. The desire to have what you cannot have is a motivating factor of many of the characters. Whether they want physical possessions, or opportunities to travel and learn, or even just tangible representations of their grief, desire is a strong theme. Everybody wants something, tangible or intangible, and most of them are not going to get it in the way that they think they are.
