Abstract Details

The present study sought to evaluate the incremental utility of RC procedures for direct intervention programs in the classroom based on positive reinforcement principles. The incremental utility of RC in facilitating unprogrammed and programmed generalization was also examined. Six children in the second through fourth grades of regular and special education classrooms served as Ss. A multiple case study method was employed in which each child was his own control. Direct intervention programs were implemented by undergraduates (BMRs). Dependent measures included behavior counts, reports from the BMRs, and interviews with the Ss. The present results did not provide support for hypotheses of incremental utility associated with RC procedures. Marked data variability and the factors associated with it were noted. The implications of this variability for the present results and future research were discussed. Non-specific factors operating in the present study were identified and their possible impact on the results was discussed. Apparent conflicts between data sources were analyzed and the implications derived from child interviews were examined. The discriminative value of BMRs in direct intervention programs was noted. Finally, support for recommending RC procedures under specific circumstances was presented.
