A History of the Kanawha Players of Charleston, West Virginia From 1922 to 1972

Gray, Virginia Pomroy

Abstract Details

1973, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Bowling Green State University, Theatre.
The threefold purpose of this research was: (1) to provide a documented history of the little theatre group; (2) to find the reason for its longevity and (3) to see how the organization can survive its present difficulties. The two local daily newspapers, memorabilia and members of the group helped form a complete list of plays performed by the Players and the reaction of the local critics was examined. Tables were developed to show fifty years of Administration, professional directors, physical facilities, chronological listing of plays, percentage of types, repeated productions, plays contemporary with New York and frequency of playwrights. Illustrations include: the first newspaper article; picture of the Playhouse; the Incorporation papers; the State Proclamation; the first Playbill; the front page of the Charleston Gazette; and the Commemorative Seal. An examination of the data showed that the organization survived with very little continuity. Only nine officers had served more than one term as President and five professional directors had remained for more than two seasons. The Players have always rented a theatre. No financial records or secretaries' reports have been saved. In fifty years the group produced 317 plays. The number of productions each season has decreased over the past few seasons as well as community service. The Kanawha Players served an artistic and social need in the industrial community. The organization needs to be unique in its play selection, cut costs and waste, be community minded, and utilize the talents available in the area rather than a selected few. These suggestions may save the fifty-year old organization.
