Life Imitates Art: The Drama of the 1916 Easter Uprising in Ireland

Abstract Details

1977, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Bowling Green State University, Theatre.
The general purpose of the study was to explore the correspondence between social reality and theatre, by investigation of a particularly apt example of "life-as-theatre": The Easter 1916 Uprising in Ireland. The specific purposes of the study were: 1) to explore the degree of interaction between The Rising and selected Anglo-Irish playscripts written prior to and following The Rising; 2) to analyze the extent to which The Rising was a "staged" event; and 3) to uncover information regarding an all but neglected aspect of Irish dramatic and theatrical history. An overview of pertinent Irish history revealed many precedents and "cues" from which the rebels might have composed their scenario for armed revolution. An extended look at the complex social/political/cultural matrix contemporary with The Rising revealed a climate conducive to a "staged" rebellion. A description of The Rising's composition verified the basis for its description as dramatic/theatrical. An analysis of scripts written prior to The Rising suggested that they may have encouraged or prefigured the event. An analysis of post-Rising scripts revealed variant attitudes toward the wisdom or efficacy of Easter Week, and appeared to confirm the hypothesis that The Rising was composed according to dramatic/ theatrical principles. The study concluded that a comprehensive understanding of both the pre-Rising and post-Rising scripts could be achieved only by reference to The Rising, and that a thorough appreciation of The Rising as an event is impossible without reference to the scripts which interacted with it.
