A review of the psychological literature suggests that children who display excessive aggressive behavior should receive a high priority in being selected for psychological treatment. Further, there are strong indications that new and innovative methods are needed to treat this disorder. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a cognitive-behavioral treatment program using behavioral rehearsal and self-instruction training in decreasing aggressive behavior in children. Forty-one children from 7 through 12 years of age were selected from Miami Children's Center Summer Day Camp Program. All of these children manifested aggressive behavior during the first week of camp and were assigned randomly to either a treatment group or a no-treatment control group. For a four week period the treatment group met in group and individual sessions for coping skills training involving behavioral rehearsal and self-instruction training. Twelve outcome measures were classified into five categories so as to reflect the degree of generalization of treatment effects ranging from the specific training situation to the natural setting of camp. Based on a multivariate analysis of variance for all measures. the treatment was found to be effective (F=2.90, p < .01). The most meaningful results included an improvement in interpersonal problem solving skills, a decrease in the extent to which counselors used discipline for fighting, no decrease in the amount of physical or verbal aggression recorded by counselors, and no decrease in peer ratings of aggression. Results were interpreted as offering modest support for the clinical utility of the treatment procedures. Further research and application of these treatment techniques with aggressive children appear to be justified.
