Bilingual Narrative Assessment: Exploring Similarities and Differences within Languages and Across Measures

Abstract Details

2022, Master of Science (MS), Bowling Green State University, Communication Disorders.
The present study aimed to compare narrative skills of preschool-aged Spanish-English bilingual children at the beginning and end of a school year using three narrative assessment tools. Studies to date have compared bilingual children’s performance either across time, across languages, or across measures, however, the present study is among the first to compare narrative skills across time points, languages, and measures. Spanish and English narrative samples from eight participants were coded using criteria from three commonly used narrative assessment tools (Narrative Assessment Protocol – Spanish/Narrative Assessment Protocol – 2; Instrument of Narrative Complexity; and Narrative Scoring Scheme). Changes in narratives over time were noted on the NSS and participants generally produced more complex narratives in their first language, Spanish. These findings highlight the importance of thoughtful selection of narrative assessment tools as each tool measures different skills and narratives skills differ across languages.
