Abstract
Recursive nonlinear identification algorithms are developed for a class of Hammerstein-type systems. Such systems consist of a memoryless nonlinearity, in cascade with linear system dynamics. In this work the nonlinearity includes a deadband and saturation. The parameters of both the nonlinearity and the linear system dynamics are simultaneously identified. The system dynamics are modelled as a deterministic, controlled autoregressive moving average model. The parameters of the nonlinearity and the system dynamics are assumed to be slowly time-varying. The nonlinearity is represented by a shifted and clipped polynomial equation, where the shift represents the deadband. The saturation is calculated from the estimated polynomial. The imposition of known-to-be-true equality constraints on the parameters, onto the identification, is compared to unconstrained identification. It is found that imposition of the constraints significantly improves the predictive quality of the system output. Asymptotic convergence properties of the algorithms also are established. The algorithms are then demonstrated in an application: the identification of input/output properties of electrically stimulated quadriceps muscle in paralyzed human subjects.
