An experimental and numerical study of thermocapillary flow for simulated floating-zone configurations is performed. An experimental study on oscillatory thermocapillary flow is conducted by mainly utilizing flow visualization and temperature measurements. A numerical study is conducted to supplement the experiment by solving the steady Navier-Stokes equations for the configuration with a flat and rigid free surface. The test fluids used are 2 cs silicone oil (Pr = 27) and liquid potassium chloride (Pr = 1). A ring heater is positioned around the circumference at the mid-height of a 2 cs silicone oil column which is suspended vertically between two aluminium rods (full-zone configuration). Liquid KCl is suspended in the same manner between two ceramic rods without the ring heater and is heated through the top rod (half-zone configuration). The effects of heating conditions and Prandtl number on thermocapillary flow are investigated. Flow and temperature oscillations are observed for both tests. The critical temperature differences and temperature distributions are measured for various conditions and the flow patterns for those conditions are observed through a microscope and/or by a video system. It is thought that the thinness of t he thermal boundary layer along the free surface relative to the dynamic free surface deformation causes the flow to be oscillatory.
