ANTIBIOTIC DELIVERY SYSTEM FOR SURGICAL SITE INFECTION PREVENTION IN SPINAL IMPLANT SURGERY

Abstract Details

2010, Master of Sciences, Case Western Reserve University, Biology.
A surgical site infection (SSI) is an infection that occur post surgery at the site of surgical incision. Around 1.5 million SSI infections are reported in the United States each year. These surgical site infections remain a major cause of post-operative illness, morbidity and less frequent cause of death in the surgical patient. Therefore, there is a considerable demand for improvement in the existing therapeutic outcomes for prevention of surgical site infection. The objective of this proposal is to study the functional ability of the Arteriocyte’s Magellan® derived autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) coupled with an antibiotic, Kefzol (cefazolin. sodium salt) to prevent the incidence of surgical site infection in post-operative spinal surgery. The underlying hypothesis of this proposal is the use of autologous platelet rich plasma gel as a continuous antibiotic delivery vehicle for prevention of surgical site infection in patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion.
