Dental Service Utilization in HIV-Infected Adults

Previous studies have reported high levels of dental need and low levels of dental service use amongst HIV-infected adults. Sixty-six HIV-infected adults were interviewed to assess determinants of dental service use. Andersen’s Behavioral Model provided the theoretical framework with the primary outcome measured as subjects’ self-report of a dental visit within the previous year. Each model domain independently contributed a significant predictor; white race, regular dental visits since seroconversion, more positive oral health attitudes and higher oral health quality of life were significantly correlated with a dental visit within the previous year. Subjects reported significantly fewer restorations and more periodontal treatments after seroconversion. While no factors retained significance in multivariate modeling, results suggest that there may be utility in using Andersen’s model to predict use of dental services. Future research should employ a qualitative or mixed-methods approach due to complexities in sampling and characterizing behavior in HIV-infected adult urban cohorts.
