Research indicates Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have behavioral and genetic connections. Comparisons of PWS subtypes found greater autistic symptomatology in maternal uniparental disomy (mUPD) than paternal deletion (pDEL). Also, both disorders reveal social skills and facial processing deficits. This study investigated face discrimination in PWS and ASD and its relationship to social skills. Participants, 44 with PWS (14 pDEL and 19 mUPD) and 16 with ASD, were assessed on face discrimination, IQ, and social behavior. Overall, PWS and ASD displayed similar impaired face discrimination. One difference involved lighting variation, with PWS performing better. Overall, PWS subtypes performed similarly. Yet, pDEL, not mUPD, appeared closer in face processing abilities to ASD. Finally, face processing and social adaptive skills were not significantly correlated for any groups. Results indicated that PWS and ASD have face discrimination processing deficits that do not appear to be related to day-to-day social functioning.
