Intumescent coatings have long been used as effective methods for long-term passive fire protection for buildings. However, much is still unknown about these coatings making it that large scale testing of fully coated steel beams necessary for coating certification. If a coating fails the certification test this comes at a large monetary cost with nothing gained. Thus, a laboratory-scale test that can help predict if a coating will pass the large scale test was studied. There were two main goals: to design and build an apparatus to collect many different types of data all at once from a single test and to perform tests on different samples to gain a better understanding of intumescent coatings. To perform the study, an apparatus was built that was able to maintain a constant heat flux to a samples surface even as the surface location changed. Three different coatings were tested while varying different parameters such as applied heat flux, coating thickness, and plate thickness, while measuring mass loss, expansion, temperature, and heat flux through the samples. By using the tests a better understanding of how the intumescents react to varying heat fluxes was able to be seen along with different trends and behavior patterns of different coatings.
