Effects of Drill-Based Therapy on the Recognition and Transcoding of Arabic Numerals in an Adult with Chronic Aphasia

Roll, Marika JoBeth

Abstract Details

, Master of Arts, Case Western Reserve University, Communication Sciences.
People with aphasia often have difficulty understanding and/or using numbers in everyday life. These difficulties can include impairments in number recognition, counting, transcoding, comprehension, and production. Despite the impact that numeric deficits can have on day-to-day functioning for the person with aphasia, there is limited research focused on interventions for these deficits. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to complete a single-case study of an intensive drill-based intervention, modeled after Albinger et al. (2006), to examine whether transcoding Arabic numerals into spoken words could be improved. The results of this study indicated that numeric transcoding skills were improved using a drill-based intervention program. The results reinforce the importance and potential benefits of direct intervention which targets numeric deficits for individuals with chronic aphasia.
