Abstract Details

2016, Doctor of Philosophy, Case Western Reserve University, Music Education.
The purpose of this research study was to investigate the role and effects of presentational performance in American K-12 music programs. This research was conducted using a grounded theory approach, in which data is analyzed qualitatively to develop a theory that describes or explains the phenomenon under consideration. Participants in this study were nine music educators in three school districts representing geographically and socioeconomically diverse communities in the state of Ohio. Data collection measures included initial interviews, participant observations, follow-up interviews, artifact collection, participant journals, and focus group interviews, all of which were subjected to an iterative and ongoing process of data analysis. The primary finding of this study was that presentational performances play a central role in American K-12 music programs. Within this overarching conclusion, four main themes emerged to describe the ways in which participatory performance structures interact with the music teaching-learning process. These themes were community expectations, student motivation, time management, and a distinction between performance preparation and conceptual teaching activities. Participants also repeatedly expressed that they felt performances were a valuable and irreplaceable part of their curriculum and subject matter. Implications for the field of music education and possibilities for future research are discussed.
