AN OFFSHORE FLOATING WIND TURBINE PLATFORM PROTOTYPE: DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTATION

Abstract Details

, Master of Sciences, Case Western Reserve University, EECS - Electrical Engineering.
Traditional methods for performance analysis and controller design of offshore floating wind turbine platforms (OFWTP) mostly focus on computer simulation. However, the complexity of the problem reduces the possibilities of the pure computer based analysis. At the same time, full scale real experiments are extremely expensive and demand the economic and engineering cooperation of large industrial/institutional consortia and a multi-year effort. This thesis proposes a new experimental approach for analysis, design and validation of OFWTPs. It is based on a lab scale wind tunnel, a 6 degree-of-freedom (DoF) STP, fully instrumented small wind turbines, lab scale aerodynamic blades, electrical generators and advanced control systems. The OFWTP is composed of a lab scale 6-DoF STP with 6 link-mechanism legs, 6 servo motors and a direct/forward control system. Experiments with lab scale wind turbines mounted on the OFWTP are conducted in the wind tunnel at the Control and Energy System Center at Case Western Reserve University. Simulated ocean waves, including regular and irregular ocean wave modeling based on ocean wave spectrum are generated by the STP. The aerodynamic power coefficient for the wind turbine prototypes is then experimentally calculated and analyzed.
