The Development of a Visual System for MantisBot: A Robot Modeled after the Praying Mantis

This thesis presents work done to advance robotics through the use of biological models of praying mantis behavior. Described in this document are modi cations and additions made to the robot, MantisBot. The most signi cant of these modi cations to MantisBot is the addition of a head with a simpli ed vision system. This vision system consists of ve oriented voltaic panels that distinguish the location of the most dominant light source with respect to the head. The purpose of this vision system is to provide the neural control system of the robot with descending commands, allowing for the investigation of targeted motions and transitions between them. This paper summarizes the design and implementation of this head sensor on MantisBot, while also presenting calibration data revealing the vision system's ability to encode a light source's elevation and azimuth angle as well as its distance. Also provided are captured video frames showing the results of the vision system working with the robot's locomotion controls.
