RACIAL DIFFERENCES IN STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS, COPING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AMONG URBAN OLDER ADULTS

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Philosophy, Case Western Reserve University, Sociology.
Guided by a stress and coping model, this research considers racial differences in stressful life events (e.g. early life crises and recent life events), coping (e.g. religiosity, social supports and cognitive appraisal) and psychological well-being (e.g. depressive symptoms and life satisfaction) among African American and White Older Adults. This study utilizes the first wave of a longitudinal survey of successful aging. This data contains in person interviews with 409 randomly selected respondents, aged 60 years or older, in Cleveland, Ohio. The survey was administered to obtain older adults’ reports of stressful life experiences, coping mechanisms and their physical and psychological well-being. Findings suggest that, due to structural disadvantage, African American older adults were more likely to have experienced negative stressful life events than their White counterparts. In addition to unequal distribution of stressful life events in the two racial groups, the coping process was also found to differ along racial lines. African American older adults reported coping strategies (i.e. social support, religiosity and cognitive appraisal of stressful life events) that are distinct from White older adults. This study found that Blacks on average have a higher likelihood of religiosity and religious coping and reported higher overall life satisfaction than their White counterparts. Findings also indicate that Blacks on average have lower domain-specific life satisfaction than their White counterparts.
