Evidence of Stress in Native American Populations of Florida: Investigations into the Microstructure of Enamel

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Sciences, Case Western Reserve University, Biology.
Native American remains from archaeological sites of Florida ranging from early Archaic hunter-gatherer (7,100-5,800 B.C.) to sedentary, maize agriculturalist (A.D. 1,000-1,700) populations were utilized in this study. Developmental defects of enamel, such as pathological striae and linear enamel hypoplasias, were utilized to understand the physiological stresses these populations experienced. High frequencies of pathological striae were found in the enamel of the Native Americans living during Spanish colonialism. Low frequencies of pathological striae and high frequencies of linear enamel hypoplasias were found in the enamel of Early Archaic hunter-gatherers. This project found that pathological striae and linear enamel hypoplasias occur at significantly different ages across all populations suggesting that pathological striae and linear enamel hypoplasias have unique sources of stress. It is believed that the pathological striae observed in these populations occurred from acute episodes of weanling diarrhea while the linear enamel hypoplasias resulted from prolonged periods of malnutrition.
