Development and Proof of Concept of a Vestibulo-Ocular reflex Rehabilitation Video Game

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Sciences (Engineering), Case Western Reserve University, EECS - Electrical Engineering.
Vestibular disorders occur commonly in the general population and become obstacles in the normal life. Vestibular rehabilitation is the standard treatment for the disorders. However, current vestibular rehabilitation methods have their own limitations and cannot be customized to fit each patient’s level of disability. In this thesis, an interactive video game aiming for customized vestibular rehabilitation is implemented. The purpose of this thesis to demonstrate the feasibility of this video game for training the vestibulo-ocular reflex that coordinates eye rotation during head rotation. The game has two versions: a monitor version and a Virtual Reality version. In the monitor version, we designed two training paradigms, the single-step paradigm and the incremental paradigm. In the Virtual Reality version, we obtained preliminary data on the relationship between vestibular training outcomes and training distance.
