DECODING THE DATA AND CONTROL STRUCTURE OF AN UNKNOWN MICROPROCESSOR

Abstract Details

, Master of Sciences, Case Western Reserve University, EECS - Computer and Information Sciences.
Given an unknown microprocessor, can we recover its organization and functionality? Methods developed to answer this question could have implications for neuroscience as well as the emerging eld of hardware security. In this thesis, we investigate several approaches to classify transistors and wires in a microprocessor as primarily engaged in data processing or control operations, including unsupervised learning, supervised learning, and semi-supervised learning. We show that, with 30% labeled data, a semi-supervised learning approach combining physical layout and functional information can classify transistors with 84% accuracy. We next explore combining connection information between transistors. This setting requires the solution of two coupled semi-supervised learning problems. We propose a constrained co-training algorithm to solve this problem. This approach increases the accuracy of labeling wires with limited labels. Finally, we analyze results from the semi-supervised learning and the constrained co-training to produce further improvements in transistor and wire labels.
