DIFFERENCES IN COGNITIVE PERFORMANCES WHILE WALKING, STANDING & SITTING

The use of workstations treadmills may help impede the prevalence of obesity and inadequate amounts of cardiovascular exercise. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether utilizing a workstation treadmill for its walking capabilities while completing cognitive tasks would impede cognitive performance and to identify any differences in results between males and females. Thirty healthy adult volunteers (mean: 22.73 ± 2.13 years of age) completed the research protocol that involved completing the Stroop test once under three different conditions: sitting, standing, and walking (mean walking speed: 2.87 ± 0.51 mph). The collection period consisted of these three randomized trials and the data was collected using Inquisit 4 software, a TR 1200 DT workstation treadmill, and a Polar heart rate monitor. No significant differences existed between genders in any of the three conditions. A significant difference (p < 0.05) was found between the sitting and walking conditions in regards to reaction time of congruent color-word pairs, for which walking decreased reaction time. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were also observed between correct responses given between sitting and walking as well as standing and walking, for which accuracy deceased with walking. Cognitive functionality differed between all conditions and both genders. Heart rate responses during the walking trial were not high enough to meet the criteria for cardiovascular benefit, with an average maximum of 55.91% of age-predicted maximum.
