The Ua Gáibhtheacháin Letters is a novel excerpt that follows the story of an Irish immigrant couple – Roisin and Cormac Ua Gáibhtheacháin – as they adjust to a new life in America. Two or so years into living in their new home, Cormac voluntarily enlists into the U.S. Armed Forces and is shipped off to Vietnam, leaving Roisin and his son behind. The two keep in contact through letters, but these notes often withhold the most important information that reveals how much each character is struggling with this new life. Roisin’s tending to a toddler, pregnant with her second, in the midst of nursing classes at her local hospital, and constantly fighting off her husband’s aunt’s judgmental comments about every aspect of her life. Cormac is living in an unfamiliar environment doing work he’s not entirely qualified to do, and after a few weeks of life on base, he starts to see the harsh realities of a soldier during the Vietnam War. The couple writes back and forth, but eventually their letters grow sparse, and the tension between the two comes to a head. With a visit to her new priest and a hastily written journal entry, Roisin realizes what truly needs to happen: an open, honest conversation – even in the form of a letter – with her husband. Other Stories is a linked collection of narratives telling the story of Reagan McCarthy, a young girl with an odd interest with animals. From a young age she feels connected with non-human mammals. Through learning to drive, going to college to take a Biology class, and eventually working at a pet supply store, Reagan’s interests related to animals grow more specific. Woodland creatures such as squirrels and rabbits are her favorite critters. Throughout the latter half of the collection, her intrigue with these creatures increases, eventually turning into a full-blown obsession.
