As If And

Abstract Details

2021, Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, Cleveland State University, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
As If And is a collection of poems that emphasize sound and humor as gateways to creative generation and discovery in an attempt to map the overlapping surfaces of music and language and question at which point(s) certain experimental aesthetics may become politically active spaces. By freely engaging with and disengaging from form, drawing variously on modes of Objectivist, Post/Modernist, Ecopoetic, and Language movements in experimental poetics, and paying special attention to the sonic and semantic possibilities of fragment and surprise, this collection seeks to explore relationships between self and culture, technology, late capitalism, and hope(lessness) through active play in and experimentation with language. If by ascribing words to our world we give parts of it definite meanings, might we remake that world through new acts of re-ascription? This question is impossible to answer, when language itself seems an inherently inadequate tool. As If And is about the end of knowing, and is intended as a type of response to an unanswerable question.
