Abstract
The primary objective of this thesis is to introduce an integrated design framework specifically tailored for the development of smart healthcare products utilizing in-mold electronic (IME) technology, which before now is nonexistent. This innovative framework goes beyond healthcare and extends its applicability to various industries utilizing IME technology for manufacturing purposes. This was achieved by carefully studying existing design frameworks for additive manufacturing, injection molding, healthcare products, and engineering frameworks were carefully studied. The outcome of this research effort is the establishment of a well-structured framework for smart healthcare products, consisting of two main sections: product design and manufacturing process design. This comprehensive framework offers a step-by-step guideline, beginning with material selection and extending up to tooling design, implemented through various stages starting from concept, embodiment, to detailed design. Notably, the framework was put into practice after the development of a pulse oximeter with many alterations, which helps to demonstrate its practicality and effectiveness in creating high-quality, cost-efficient products. Furthermore, it is crucial to emphasize that the versatility of this framework extends beyond smart healthcare products, and its performance should be evaluated in variety of manufacturing industries. The application of this framework in other sectors is significant for future exploration, with the potential to give valuable insights into its flexibility and effectiveness in various IME technology-based manufacturing scenarios. This research serves as a pioneering step in providing an integrated solution for IME-based product design and manufacturing.
