Copper(II) and Ruthenium(II) Complexes from Polydentate Ligands

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Science (M.S.), University of Dayton, Chemistry.
This thesis covers two separate projects, one involving copper(II) complexes and the other ruthenium(II) complexes. Part one glosses the roles played by copper in biological systems, various types of copper based enzymes, and some of the metal complexes used to mimic systems involving copper in biology. Part two covers a novel synthesis of a new dipyrromethene and its subsequent complexation with two Ru(bpy)2Cl2 molecules. Electronic absorption spectra and cyclic voltammograms were recorded for all complexes. Little can be drawn from the experiments involving the copper complexes as they were largely unsuccessful. It is our hope, however, that the results of the experiments with the ruthenium(II) dipyrromethene complex will contribute to the growing body of research on phototheranostics and/or solar cells.
