I propose to fulfill the role of technical director for the Kent State University School of Theatre and Dance’s production of Three Sisters as my thesis project. Director Mark Monday has stated that the production’s focus should be on the interpersonal relationships of the characters and the internal and external forces driving them through the passage of time. Scenic designer Raynette H. Smith supports this concept in her design by visually indicating a motif of the four seasons and hours of a clock as part of the floor treatment. These aspects will allow the lights, multiple playing levels, and birch tree-like forms to create and change shadow patterns in order to visually indicate the passage of time. My task for Three Sisters will include but are not limited to creating and managing a build schedule, drafting and working drawings, as well as developing and maintaining a budget. I will also be responsible for engineering and overseeing construction and collaborating with the production and design staff to maintain the integrity of Monday’s concept. Technical design challenges come in the form of creating a “forest of birch trees” on stage with inexpensive materials as well as modifying a prior mezzanine extension to suit the needs of Smith’s design. Additionally the task of devising and choreographing three “au vista” scene changes, two of which must happen quickly and smoothly will provide an opportunity for me to hone my skills for this type of work. The combination of inexperienced workers and a shortened build schedule for Three Sisters offers me a chance to refine my management and engineering skills and develop new ones throughout the production process.
