Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge (ONWR) encompasses 4,683 acres in northwestern Ohio on the shores of Lake Erie’s western basin. The study site, Crane Creek Coastal Wetland (CCCW), is located in the northeastern section of ONWR. CCCW is characterized by sparse submersed macrophyte growth likely resulting from a combination of large, frequent seiche-driven water level fluctuations, consistently high turbidity, and significant carp herbivory/ disturbance. Thus, we used exclosures to isolate areas of submersed macrophytes from the presence of fish of varying size classes to assess the role of fish in structuring wetland macrophyte and invertebrate assemblages. We excluded fish of varying size classes from 1 m X 1 m plots located in a secondary seiche channel. Experimental treatments included: cageless controls, 50 mm x 100 mm rectangular mesh chicken wire exclosures, and 20 mm mesh hardware cloth exclosures. Mesh size determined the size of fish that could enter or leave a given exclosure. Macrophyte density and species richness were assessed monthly from July through October 2001 and every two weeks from May through October 2002 in each exclosure and cageless control. Invertebrates were sampled monthly from July through October 2001 with pelagic activity traps and benthic core sampling. Fish were sampled in October 2001 and every two weeks from May through October 2002 using minnow traps and a bag seine.
