The current project consisted of two investigations to determine if self-control predicts post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and to what extent this relationship changes over the course of treatment for PTSD. Study 1 explored the predictive value of self-control for PTSD symptoms in a sample of 65 inner-city women. The study also explored the reverse relationship to determine if PTSD symptoms predicted future levels of self-control. Results revealed that baseline levels of self-control predicted subsequent PTSD symptoms, as individuals with greater self-control may better manage their PTSD symptoms. However, PTSD symptoms at baseline did not predict subsequent levels of self-control. Study 2 elaborated on this notion by examining whether executive function, which includes abilities important for self-control, changes over the course of PTSD treatment in women. Results showed that PTSD symptoms and performance on a measure of executive function improved after receiving trauma-focused treatment. Although self-control did not change following treatment, it was related to a measure of executive function. These two studies contribute to the literature as little is known about the association among self-control, executive function, and PTSD.
