A SCHOLAR'S MUSES AND A CRAFTSMAN'S IMPLEMENTS

Hambly, Derek Thomas

Abstract Details

2010, MFA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Art.
My interests in communicating an idea are concentrated in the diversity of the natural world, the tools of my trade, ideas of ritual, and individual studies of the environment and its elements. I have approached these ideals with a scholars voice in relation to my works. It is the dissection and study of these thoughts, to bring a more informed understanding of what it is that I see, which allows me to translate scholarly insight into a visual idea. It is within their ability to record, through their slow erosion or decomposition, where I find the beauty of our moments here in this world. This sense of “timelessness” is rooted in the craft of ceramics and more precisely in the traditional tools used within the medium. There are definitive tools, which have followed a traditional lineage that are still prevalent in today’s practices. The cultural transcendence of process is the heart of these objects and their functions have been interpreted in many variable fashions.
