Past research has suggested that depression and anxiety are similarly associated with sexual problems. However, methodological concerns may have prevented the opportunity to detect potential specificity among affective and sexual problems. Particularly, high correlations among measures of depression and anxiety, age-related medical conditions, and iatrogenic effects of antidepressants can act as potential confounds when exploring the relations of affect and sexual functioning. To address these concerns, the present study first examined the utility of administering commonly used measures of sexual functioning to a sample of young, healthy males and females. Next, Clark and Watson’s (1991) tripartite model was employed to examine the associations and potential specificity of relations among affective and sexual problems. Analyses revealed the sexual functioning measures to be valid for use in the sample. Further analyses revealed specificity of associations among affective and sexual problems and, further, that these associations differed by gender.
