The purpose of this dissertation is to describe how six professional communicators collaboratively construct an internal newsletter for Midwest Utility, a large utility company. Through interview and observational data as well as textual analysis of newsletters and article drafts, this project examines the research participants’ literate practices as they are embedded within Midwest Utility’s complex organizational structure. More specifically, the focus of this dissertation is the professional communicators’ collaborative response practices that they engage in during the document review process of the Delivery News internal newsletter. Because the research participants work from three different offices located across three states, they utilize various technological tools to mediate collaboration of which includes inserting comments on article drafts as afforded by Microsoft Word. Identifying and analyzing these comments yielded evidence of the specific ways in which these professional communicators negotiate written communication.
