Abstract
My Masters Thesis Exhibition Glass Articulated investigates the intersection of intangible, non-physical words, thoughts or ideas with tangible, physical glass word objects. These word sculptures are intended to evoke common, shared or relatable experiences, with themes including water, evolution, time, the future and portraiture. My exploration invites the viewer to be a part of my interest in words, their flexibility or humor, and my interest in building experimental sculptural forms. I am currently using worked glass, found objects, metal screen and steel rod to explore this translation of non-physical words to concrete objects. My design process begins with drawings, doodling, and words lists, but a strong component of my design intent is to create innovative forms by experimenting with manufactured round rod glass and tubing. In the process of creating Glass Articulated, I have tried to make thematic choices and then allow the “word theme” to help determine the unique, essential structural elements for the piece. Putting together a word list, I sketch framing or mounting elements, designing modules to be intersected with each other by fusion or proximity. These visuals reveal the genuine character of my conceptual process, as I adjust and improve the working designs. Permeating the exhibition, familiar sensations, thoughts, objects, and images encourage the viewer to appreciate, enjoy or interrogate my work from a personal perspective or frame of reference.
