Abstract Details

2013, MFA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of English.
While Chicago broils under the worst heat wave in history, Lucy Sullivan begins to disappear. Newly widowed and stuck in a dead-end job as a fossil preparator at The Field Museum in Chicago, Lucy sinks deeper into her sorrow and her body begins to cast off a strange shadow, a mirror double of her that threatens to consume her. She embarks on a strange odyssey with the even stranger and career-driven paleontologist, Dr. Marcella Burton, who has a secret gift for helping women like Lucy. The Great Dying takes Lucy, Dr. Burton, and a group of museum staff from the sweltering city to the barren, bizarre landscape of Utah where Lucy stands on the precipice of extinction. Part psychological journey, part paleontological mystery, part love story, THE GREAT DYING explores how one woman attempts to reestablish her identity after tragedy.
