Hitting It Out of the Ballpark and Into the Community: A Case Study Analysis of the Akron Aeros Community Relations Programs

Abstract Details

2013, MA, Kent State University, College of Communication and Information / School of Media and Journalism.
The role of sports within our society is met with both positive and negative opinions. Much attention is paid to the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey League (NHL). However, lower level leagues such as Minor League Baseball (MiLB) are not only successful, but actively contributing to their community. As a qualitative case study analysis, the goal of this paper is to understand the role of one MiLB team, the Akron Aeros, community relations efforts as a way to build social capital throughout the surrounding community. In addition, dialogic theory is utilized to examine not only the types of communication channels, but also the created messages used to communicate the goals of the organization to the surrounding community. From the history of MiLB and the Akron Aeros, to the various opportunities available for community involvement and collaboration, this paper provides an in-depth look at the work of one minor league team striving to build a relationship with their community for the future.
